UN military advisor visits Sudan

06 June 2011 - Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye, the Military Advisor to the United Nations

Headquarters, visited the troubled Sudanese region of Abyei and the other two likely flashpoints

of the country, namely the Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile States on 02 and 03 June 2011.

The General was accompanied by the UNMIS Force commander, Major General Moses Obi. more

Noted BBC Presenter Zeinab Badawi Meets Women Balladeers As They Sing for Peace and DDR in Sudan

Khartoum, 1 April 2010 – Well-known BBC presenter of Sudanese origin, Ms. Zeinab Badawi, spent time with the Hakama women singing group and watched them perform at the Tayeba displaced persons camp in Khartoum North. The Hakamas had traveled from Southern Kordofan State to perform for Ms. Badawi, who is in the country to learn about the role of cultural symbols and the folk and traditional forms of communication in peace-building.

Donors observe progress in the DDR firsthand

30 March 2010 - Donor representatives appraised yesterday in Ed Damazin, Blue Nile State, firsthand, progress in the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process, a year after the Sudanese authorities launched the programme with support from the international community.

Groundbreaking ceremony at site of future U.N. Headquarters in southern Sudan

JUBA – The site of the future headquarters of the United Nations in southern Sudan was formally inaugurated at a groundbreaking ceremony outside the regional capital of Juba this afternoon. The Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General for Sudan, Mr. Ashraf Qazi, attended the ceremony, which was hosted by the Regional Coordinator for Southern Sudan of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), Mr. David Gressly. The Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) was represented by its Presidential Affairs Minister, Dr. Luka Biong Deng.

Boundaries are not barriers, says Abyei Administration to Misseriya and Dinka-Ngok

A series of four Abyei villages’ hall meetings was concluded yesterday in the first ever post-court ruling engagement of the area’s Administration with the Misseriya and Dinka-Ngok communities. The Administration’s message that “boundaries are not barriers” was positively received by some 4,000 participants that welcomed the Abyei leadership’s initiative to actively re-engage with the rural communities.

First elections workshop for Sudanese Political Parties

A one-day workshop on Elections was organized today in Khartoum by the Political Parties Affairs Council (PPAC) with the support from UNMIS and the UN Development Programme. The workshop, which was the first of its kind, brought together nearly 180 representatives drawn from 62 registered political parties across the country. The PPAC was established by the Political Parties Act of 2007 as an independent national body responsible for registering and regulating political parties in the Sudan.

The Joint Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission in Southern Kordofan has stepped up operations, with the launch of a second demobilisation centre in the State yesterday, 5 August.

10 June - Sudan DDR programme launched in southern Sudan, $30 million pledged by GoSS

The release of $30 million for the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) programme in southern Sudan was announced earlier today in Juba at the launch of the DDR programme in the region.
