UNMHA Officer-in-Charge Briefs Security Council Ahead of Mandate Decision

New York, 14 December 2026 – The Officer-in-Charge of UNMHA, Ms. Mari Yamashita, briefed the Security Council in closed consultations on the Mission’s activities and the situation in its mandated areas.

During the briefing, the OiC underscored UNMHA’s continued engagement to maintain the implementation of its mandate and support the Hudaydah Agreement. The OiC highlighted the Mission’s sustained liaison with the parties. She also shared her assessment on UNMHA’s stabilizing impact on the ground albeit emerging challenges faced by the Mission over the past six years.

The Security Council is expected to decide on future UNMHA’s mandate by 27 January 2026.

In advance of today’s briefing, the OiC has undertaken a series of engagements with a wide range of stakeholders to exchange views on the Mission’s mandate and the prevailing dynamics on the ground. These engagements have included discussions with the Permanent Representative of Yemen to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al‑Saʿdi, among other interlocutors.

UNMHA remains committed to carrying out its responsibilities in line with relevant Security Council resolutions and to supporting efforts that contribute to stability and the protection of civilians in the Hudaydah governorate.
