MINUJUSTH
United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti

Closure of MINUJUSTH

The United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH) completed its mandate on 15 October 2019, concluding 15 years of UN peacekeeping in Haiti. The United Nations family continues to support Haiti through the United Nations agencies, funds, and programmes in the country, and through the Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH).

About MINUJUSTH

The mandate of the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH) was established by Security Council Resolution 2350, adopted on April 13, 2017.

MINUJUSTH has a mandate focused on 4 areas:

  • continue to support national authorities in the development and professionalization of the Haitian National Police;
  • strengthen rule of law institutions, including the justice and correctional services sectors;
  • promote the promotion and protection of human rights, including issues of gender equality and equity;
  • and contribute through good offices to political dialogue.

The Security Council's decision to establish the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH) is an important element of the UN's ongoing commitment to stability in Haiti, which further requires the strengthening of rule of law institutions.

MINUJUSTH is a window of opportunity to consolidate the political stability achieved in recent years, in order to pave the way for a democratic, stable and prosperous future for all Haitians.

At the same time, this reflects a phased transition strategy, so that the UN country team and national actors can gradually take over and assume full responsibility for areas from which peacekeeping will emerge through continued police development and the strengthening of the rule of law, including in the justice, corrections and human rights sectors.
