Closure of UNMIS

UNMIS wound up its operations on 9 July 2011 with the completion of the interim period agreed on by the Government of Sudan and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), signed on 9 January 2005.

The mission ended its six years of mandated operations the same day South Sudan declared independence, following a CPA-provided referendum on 9 January 2011 that voted overwhelmingly in favour of secession.

In support of the new nation, the Security Council established a successor mission to UNMIS – the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) – on 9 July for an initial period of one year, with the intention to renew for further periods as required.

Resolutions of the Security Council

11 Jul 2011

  • The Security Council decided to withdraw UNMIS effective 11 July 2011 and requests the Secretary-General to transfer appropriate staff, equipment, supplies and other assets from UNMIS to the new UN peacekeeping– UNMISS and UNISFA [S/RES/1997(2011)]

  • The Security Council decides to extend the mandate of UNMIS until 9 July 2011 and announces its intention to establish a successor mission in South Sudan [S/RES/1978 (2011)]

29 Apr 2010

  • The Security Council decides to extend the mandate of UNMIS for one year, until 30 April 2011, with the intention to renew it for further periods if required

20 May 2009

  • The Security Council decides to extend the mandate until April 30, 2010

15 Oct 2008

  • The Security Council decides to extend the mandate of the current Panel of Experts until 15 October 2009

30 Apr 2008

  • The Security Council decides to extend the mandate until April 30, 2009

31 Oct 2007

  • The Security Council decides to extend the mandate until April 30, 2008
