22 April - UNMIS deeply concerned about the renewed tribal clashes in Jonglei State

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) today voiced deep concern about the renewed tribal clashes in Jonglei State, where dozens of people were reportedly killed over the weekend, with many more injured or displaced.
UNMIS reiterates its call on all parties to refrain immediately from using violence and encourages tribal and community leaders to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue and in accordance with the spirit of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. UNMIS also calls on local authorities to assume their full responsibilities to restore stability in the affected areas.
UNMIS urges the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) to do its utmost to ensure the safety and security of the civilians and to find an early and effective solution to the tribal hostilities in Jonglei State.
UNMIS stands ready, within its capabilities, to provide support to the GoSS to prevent any further escalation. UN agencies and humanitarian organizations will continue to provide assistance to the stricken communities.
