In a bid to improve the lives of orphans in Western Bahr El Ghazal State, UNMIS' Chinese medical team donated medicine, stationary and food to Wau's El Shadai Orphanage on 25 May.
Handing over the more than $2,000 worth of items, UNMIS Wau Force Commander John Warriba stressed that helping children was a UN and non-governmental organization priority. "Whenever you work to help these disadvantaged children, you will not be alone."
Also attending the event were Ministry of Social Development officials, including Director General of Social Development Martin Ajuong, El Shadai members and orphans as well as representatives of UNMIS and UNICEF.
Director General Ajuong said the donation would give fresh life to children needing assistance. "When somebody visits a particular home and hands over medicine, this means he or she gives a life to the person who receives the medicine."
During the event, a Chinese medical specialist conducted check-ups for some of the orphans, provided free medicine and trained the children in maintaining hygienic conditions in and outside their compound.
El Shadai Orphanage, which was founded in 2007 by Wau Pentecostal Church, is funded by the non-governmental organization Dorcas Aid International. Currently, the orphanage is sheltering about 20 children from four to 12 years old.
