To strengthen the security apparatus in Wau and its environs, UN Police spent about two months training a Formed Police Unit, which graduated in a ceremony on 22 May.

Noting that the training was the first of its kind in the region, Deputy Training Director of Western Bahr El Ghazal State Lt. Col. Andreow Cibok advised his assembled officers to apply the knowledge and experience they had acquired in practice.

"This kind of training is very significant to our officers because it enables them to apply a new approach to any security concerns in the area," the Lt. Col. Said.

Maj. Alemu Geneti, UN Police Wau Training Coordinator, said the Formed Police Unit of 29 local officers, including 10 women, had been trained in VIP Security, Special Weapons and Tactics ( SWAT), and Riot Control.

UN Police in Wau have conducted more than 37 training courses for local police since 1 April this year, Maj. Geneti said. Courses offered focused on human rights, gender and child protection, community policing, criminal investigation, airport security, first level supervision and senior management.
