New playgrounds for Juba’s children

UNMIS and the non-governmental organization Right to Play handed over three renovated playgrounds on 26 February to Gudele West Basic School and Supiri Secondary School in Juba.

The renovation was part of an UNMIS Quick Impact Project implemented by Right to Play. Four secondary schools and 16 basic primary schools also received a variety of sporting equipment. QIPs are small scale, low-cost, rapidly completed projects, which benefit the local population.

"Playing children signify good health, satisfaction and happiness. I believe these grounds will help build, entertain and keep the children happy," said Abraham Lado Isaac, Director for Basic Education, Central Equatoria State Ministry of Education.
Also present at the event was Levi Samson, Deputy Director for Education, Juba County, representatives from UNMIS and Right to Play and parents as well as children.
Fatima Persson, UNMIS Southern Sudan Rule of Law chief said UNMIS was committed to promote the rights of all Sudanese children. "The opening of these grounds is a sign of peace in Southern Sudan. Peace is not only for adults but also for children. I hope these playgrounds will be a place for peace and enjoyment."
Ayen Helen, Programme representative of Right to Play, thanked UNMIS for the $23,750 grant. "With your support we have been able to bring smiles to these children's faces."
