Thousands affected by Aweil floods

The number of people affected by floods in Aweil has continued to fluctuate, with figures ranging from 39,000 to much higher numbers, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The UN, in collaboration with the State Government of North Bahr el Ghazal, decided to send an assessment mission to evaluate the situation. The report of the mission, which began its work on 6 August, will guide general humanitarian response in the area.
The Governor of North Bahr el Ghazal has also instituted a Crisis Management Committee, comprising the government, UN and non-governmental organizations to review the situation and provide further clarity on the extent of needs.
Meanwhile, distribution of food and non-food items (NFIs) is on-going. This includes 5-10 litres of safe water and 590 grams of mixed food commodities such as cereals, oil, pulses and salt, per person per day.
Also being distributed are NFIs, including 11,420 kitchen sets, blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, and other necessities.
