17 October 2010 - Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau (SSRB) Chairman Justice Chan Reec Madut swore in 65 referendum sub-committee members from 13 counties of Upper Nile State today in a ceremony in Malakal hosted by the state's Referendum High Committee.
"You are sworn in to undertake an important responsibility on behalf of the people of Southern Sudan. Do your best to administer the referendum process," said Bol Puot Yut, chair of the Upper Nile State Referendum High Committee.
Justice Madut instructed the sub-committee to form their referendum centre committees and recruit centre staff before the end of October.
"With or without money the referendum will take place," he said, "This is the future of South Sudan so everybody must register and vote."
Acting Governor Andriya Maya stressed the importance for centre committees to perform their role in a timely fashion.
"I encourage the sub-committee members to consider that (the) referendum is on the brink, so please plan properly and (get) things done on time."
The ceremony was followed by an orientation workshop on the South Sudan Referendum Act (2009) and lessons learned during April national elections by UN Integrated Referendum and Electoral Division State Training Officer Michelle Silva.
