A heavy thunder storm in the Lologo area of Juba, Southern Sudan, killed about five people and injured 22 others, two critically, on 9 March.
The five killed in the story were struck in Lologo market by lightening, which critically injured two others. The storm also blew off the roof of a prison training centre, injuring 14 trainees. Five of the trainees were critically injured and admitted to Juba Teaching Hospital.
The storm destroyed the training centre's 40 accommodation tents and severely damaged a coremec (pre-fabricated building). The roof of the prison services' clinic and its main building were also damaged.
At the time of the storm, some 289 prison officers were present in the centre for an UNMIS/Government of Southern Sudan basic middle management training course. Damage sustained to the Lologo centre, the main training locale for prisons in Southern Sudan, may have a negative impact on prison capacity building.
